Editorial Message

Inaugural Issue of Biologia Serbica: Editorial Message

Welcome to the inaugural issue of our new journal, Biologia Serbica (BS). Biologia Serbica was previously published under the name, Review of Research, Faculty of Sciences – Biology Series, by the Faculty of Sciences, Department of Biology, University of Novi Sad, Serbia. This journal had been in regular publication between 1971 and 2004, and there are currently 33 issues available. Today, after an eight year gap, we want to continue the over forty year long tradition of this journal, with a new name, concept and board of editors.

As Editors of this journal, we will follow two guiding principles to maintain the goals, scope and scientific standards we envision for BS. First, we will produce an international scientific journal of wide scope, covering all of the disciplines encompassed within the broader field of biology. Second, we will maintain the scientific credibility of BS, by setting high scientific standards through a rigorous peer-review process and strict ethical policies.

With these principles in mind, we intend to establish a high-quality, peer-reviewed, international scientific open-access journal, that publishes original research articles, reviews, and short communications in all areas of biology. Biologia Serbica will be distributed electronically, and will be published online using a continuous publication model, where all accepted articles are immediately citable. Online archiving and information on article downloads will also be available. In addition, each complete volume of the journal will be available bound in print form, marketed by our publisher.

We are keenly aware of the enormous responsibility we are taking on, and have no illusions about the amount of hard work required to accomplish our goals. However, we are eager to meet this challenge, and are very grateful for the support and confidence expressed in our editorial team by the Department of Biology and Ecology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad. We will do our utmost to live up to this responsibility.

The editorial board members of BS have been carefully chosen to ensure the success and continued improvement of this journal. All editorial board members are distinguished, internationally known scientists from respected universities and research organisations.

Finally, a call to our readership: the success of BS depends on you. Together with the Executive Editorial Board and Editorial Board, I would like to personally invite all of you to contribute your best research for consideration for publication in BS. Your work will always be met with appreciation and treated in a professional and friendly manner. In addition, we always welcome ideas to help improve BS, to make it a journal that better meets your needs.

In closing, let me please thank most cordially all of the authors who contributed to this first issue of BS with such innovative, high-quality scientific work. We are also grateful to the reviewers, whose valuable critiques helped improve the quality of the works presented here. Last, but not least, I would like to thank our publisher, the Department of Biology and Ecology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Novi Sad, for its support during publication of this journal, and for designing a user-friendly website to ease and monitor the publication process.

On behalf of all of the Editors, I sincerely hope you will enjoy this inaugural issue of Biologia Serbica and encourage you to consider submitting your very best work to BS in the future.

With most cordial regards,

Milica Matavulj
